How to build your dream portfolio

Building your dream portfolio as a wedding photographer is a huge step towards getting your dream client.

While you might feel like you currently don’t quite have the content you want in your dream portfolio, you’d be making a mistake if you aren’t working on it now with what you have.

Here are a few key steps you can take towards getting that killer content that will land you that wedding you’ve been dreaming of.

Develop your style.
Take some intentional time to visualize what your dream portfolio actually looks like. Pull images from Pinterest or Instagram of things that inspire you or you’d love to photograph some day. Put them together in a mood board and edit them so the final product is visually cohesive, captivating, and consistent.

Find hidden gems in your work.
Now that you have a clear goal of what you are working towards visually, look back through your work and see what aligns with your dream portfolio. I bet you’ve overlooked or forgotten about some images that are actually amazing.

Focus on quality, not quantity.
If you feel like you only have a small amount of images that currently work in your dream portfolio, you are in a really good place. You can do so much with a carefully curated selection of images that are beautiful and consistent. Don’t underestimate the impact of a curated gallery.

Set clear goals.
Go back to your mood board you created with images that you one day hope to have in your dream portfolio. Create a list of shoots that would achieve your goals and be specific. Research shows you are 50% more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down.

Create new content.
While you might not have inquiries in your inbox for these dream shoots you’ve set goals for, you can still get out there and create content. Be proactive, set up styled shoots, collaborate with vendors, be unstoppable. Your determination and persistence towards building your dream portfolio will pay off.
